An abdominoplasty, which is commonly called the tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgical procedure done to make the patient’s abdomen appear flatter and tighter. The abdominoplasty can be done on its own or with another procedure. A tummy tuck during the winter can get you ready to show off your new body while at the beach or near a swimming pool.

What Does a Tummy Tuck Involve?

Our surgeon will use a powerful local anesthetic called Exparel® whose effects can last up to four days. This not only keeps the patient comfortable during the procedure, it also reduces the need for pain medication during the recovery period.

An abdominoplasty includes three components: trimming away loose and excess skin, removing excess fat via liposuction and tightening abdominal muscles.

Towards the end of the procedure, Our surgeon will use a medical adhesive called TissueGlu® that will bond the tissue layers together and eliminate the need for drains – and the infections that can accompany them. TissueGlu® also promotes quicker healing and reduces scarring.

What Is the Difference Between a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction?

Both are cosmetic surgical procedures that are used to remove fat. During an abdominoplasty, Our surgeon will also tighten the abdominal muscles and remove excess skin. Liposuction never involves muscle-tightening, and only some types can tighten skin.

A patient with loosened abdominal muscles and/or a lot of sagging skin would probably get better results with an abdominoplasty. At your consultation our educated staff can help you make the right decision based on your needs and goals.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

The ideal candidate for an abdominoplasty will be somebody with realistic expectations and overall good health. The patient should be at a stable weight, for weight fluctuations can undo the procedure’s results. Similarly, they should not be planning to have more children.

Since smoking can increase bleeding and other complications, the patient needs to either be a non-smoker or to quit smoking several weeks before the surgery.

Abdominoplasties are particularly helpful for patients who have a bulging abdominal wall, lots of hanging skin in the mid or lower abdomen, and/or fat deposits in the same area.
