What Is Submental Liposuction?
Submental fullness is a problem that affects millions of people. The excess fatty deposits that accumulate beneath the chin and along the jawline are better known as a double-chin.
For the past several years, liposuction has been a popular procedure to address excess fat in various areas of the body. Submental liposuction is the technique of removing fat from the chin and jawline areas to restore a slimmer, more contoured face.
Submental Liposuction Vs. Traditional Liposuction
Submental liposuction is a traditional liposuction procedure. Doctors may use various techniques, such as tumescent liposuction or laser-assisted liposuction. Regardless of the technologies involved, liposuction is a straightforward procedure that extracts fat cells from a target area. Therefore, submental liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells from beneath the chin.
Candidates For Submental Liposuction
Adults of all ages express concern about fatty tissue beneath the chin. Many are healthy, active adults who cannot seem to sculpt the chin and jawline. The upper neck is a troublesome and challenging area that often needs assistance to look more contoured. Submental liposuction may be right for you if you are in good general health and have good skin elasticity, and understand what liposuction can achieve. Your surgeon can help you set realistic expectations during your consultation.

The Submental Liposuction Procedure
Submental liposuction is a simple process. The minimally-invasive surgery requires a few tiny incisions in the chin area. The procedure may be performed in an accredited surgery center using general anesthesia or in the office using local anesthesia. In either situation, patients are comfortable and calm. After making small incisions in discrete areas of the neck and chin, the surgeon inserts a thin hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is attached to a machine that applies gentle suction. To sculpt the jawline area, the surgeon moves the small cannula in a back-and-forth motion, removing fat in a pattern that encourages the remaining fat cells to smooth into the empty space.
After carefully sculpting the chin and jaw area, our surgeon may perform skin tightening if indicated in the surgical plan. Submental liposuction can be combined with a neck lift, facelift, or other procedures to maximize facial or body rejuvenation. After completing the procedure, the doctor applies a compression garment to help support the healing tissues. This should be worn consistently for about a week. If no other procedures are performed with submental liposuction, the surgery takes about an hour.
Recovery From Submental Liposuction
Submental liposuction is an outpatient procedure, even when ancillary procedures are included. Patients are released to a loved one once they regain alertness after anesthesia. Depending on the type of anesthesia and pain medication that are involved, it may be ideal to have a loved one nearby for 24 to 48 hours to help administer medication and provide other assistance as needed. Each patient is different, but most are ready to return to work and other light activities in 3 to 5 days. To ease the recovery process, patients are encouraged to sleep with the head elevated and to take pain medication as prescribed. Ice may be applied for 20 minutes at a time a few times a day.
Is Submental Liposuction Safe?
Liposuction is one of the leading plastic surgery procedures. It is routinely performed on all areas of the face and body and has been for many years. There are few serious side effects associated with this minimally-invasive procedure. The most common side effects include minor swelling, bruising, numbness, soreness, and tenderness. We usually expect the tiny incision scars to heal well and fade so they are not visible. Rarely, the scars do not heal as well as we would like, such as when a patient has a family history of keloid scars.
