Until Friday, (November 17, 2006) breast augmentation with silicone gel breast implants was only an option in the United States for a limited number of women, including breast reconstruction patients and other women for whom saline augmentation was not a good option. The FDA now has approved silicone implants for all women over 22 years old.
We can now present our patients with even more options for breast augmentation on a routine basis. Our surgeon has been a participant in ongoing silicone gel studies for the last 10 years, and is approved to begin silicone gel breast augmentation for first time breast augmentation patients, effective immediately.
These options offered by the Bougainvillea Clinique, now include silicone gel and saline implants, adjustable implants, subglandular, submuscular and dual plane placement of implants, and the four incision approaches including, inframammary (under the breast), areola (below the nipple), transaxillary (armpit), and the TUBA (belly button) procedures. We should note that silicone implants are not approved for placement through the TUBA incision. Many individuals have shown an interest in the newer ‘gummy bear’ or ‘cohesive gel’ implants. Both Mentor Memory Gel and Allergan Cohesive Gel implants are similar in this respect. Silicone gel implants are available in a variety of shapes ranging from low to moderate and high profile, round and anatomical, and textured surface and smooth surface implants.
