Did you know that laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed within the United States? Thousands and thousands of patients have had this procedure performed to make their lives easier by avoiding the tedious activity of hair removal through waxing, plucking, or shaving.

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

This procedure permanently removes unwanted hair through the use of a cosmetic laser. We target individual hair follicles producing unwanted hair for destruction. Once we do this enough times in the treatment area, no more unwanted hair will be able to grow there. It takes several laser treatments for the permanent removal of unwanted hair.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

We use a laser to transmit thermal energy into melanin, the part of your hair that gives it its color. Once the melanin has absorbed this energy, the hair follicle is destroyed. Hair will no longer grow from a hair follicle that has been targeted by this laser treatment.

What Are the Benefits of This Treatment?

One of the main advantages to this treatment is its ability to permanently free up your time for other activities. You will never need to pluck, wax, or shave the treatment area ever again. The treatment is also fast, targeting multiple hair follicles simultaneously.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The patients who obtain the best results in their hair removal treatments are those with darker hair. As we mentioned earlier, the laser uses the presence of melanin to target hair follicles for destruction. Since darker hair contains more melanin, the laser is better able to target it for destruction. Those with lighter hair can still be treated, but may not obtain optimal results.

Why Do I Need Multiple Treatment Sessions?

Each individual hair is in a certain phase at any given time. When a hair is in its dormant phase, no hair is produced. The hair will fall out, and there will be no hair shaft capable of being detected and targeted by the laser. Some hairs will be in a growth phase while others are dormant. Multiple treatment sessions allow us to catch each hair when it is in a growth phase and can be targeted for removal by the laser.

Before and After Treatment

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun for six weeks before and after your treatment because this can limit the effectiveness of laser hair removal or lead to adverse events after your procedure. You should also refrain from plucking, waxing, or electrolysis before your treatment so that hairs are present for targeting by the laser.
