Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that effectively removes body fat. The procedure is typically administered on the thighs, buttocks, stomach, back, hips, or arms, and it can be performed in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures, such as facelifts, tummy tucks, and breast reductions.

Who are the Best Candidates for Liposuction?

The best candidates for liposuction will have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. In addition, individuals should be at least 18 years of age an in overall good health. It is recommended for individuals who want this procedure to be within 30 percent of their ideal body weight.

What to Expect During Liposuction

Before the procedure, you should avoid taking anti-inflammatory medications that can increase the risk of bleeding. If you smoke, then you will need to stop a few weeks before the procedure to reduce the risk of complications.

Before the procedure begins, the targeted areas will be marked. Our surgeon will determine if general or local anesthesia will be used to carry out the procedure. The most common liposuction technique is tumescent liposuction. This is when our surgeon will inject a sterile solution into the targeted area. The solution is made of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine, which helps to make suction easier and results in minimal blood loss.

What is Recovery Like After Liposuction?

You may feel slight soreness for a few days following the procedure, and you will need to wear a compression garment to reduce swelling. In addition, it is also important to move every couple of hours to prevent blood clots from forming and reduce swelling. About five days following the procedure, a postoperative visit is recommended so that our surgeon can remove the compression garment and examine the area. However, the compression garment still needs to be worn for the next 10 days. It is important to keep the compression garment on except for when you take a shower.

Many individuals can return to work about two weeks after liposuction. After the third week, the compression garment only has to be worn for 12 hours a day, and many individuals are cleared to return to their normal activities four weeks after the procedure.
