Due to how thin the neck skin is, the neck is usually one of the first parts of the body to show the signs of aging. Sagging neck skin can make you look older than you actually are. Wrinkled neck skin can reveal your true age to strangers and coworkers alike. At The Bougainvillea Clinique in Winter Park, FL, we offer necklifts so our clients can keep their true age a secret.

How a Necklift Is Performed

The exact way your necklift is performed depends on several factors, including the results you are looking for. Usually, we will make several tiny incisions around and behind your ears and under your chin. What happens next depends on your aesthetic goals.

In almost every case, the underlying neck muscles are lifted and loose skin is tightened. In some cases, excess muscle, fat, and skin tissue are excised. In rare cases, we will use liposuction during your neck lift to remove a significant amount of excess fat.

Comfort

Regardless of how your neck lift is performed, you will experience no pain or discomfort. Before the incisions are made, you are placed under local anesthesia with oral sedation or general anesthesia. This means that you will be asleep during the entire process, and it also ensures you do not feel pain or discomfort once you wake up.

How to Prepare for This Procedure

The first step in preparing for this procedure is to come in for an initial consultation. During this initial consultation, we will review your medical history, including any allergies, bleeding disorders, and blood diseases, as well as your current health, the current underlying structure of your neck, and your aesthetic goals. All of this tells us if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

It will also affect how your procedure is performed. As importantly, during this consultation, we will advise you regarding how to prepare for your procedure. For instance, depending on your health, you may need to stop taking blood thinners. You may also need to stop taking certain nutritional supplements. You should also stop smoking and drinking alcohol before your procedure.

What to Expect After This Procedure

After your procedure, you are free to return home. However, due to the anesthesia, you may not drive yourself. Before your procedure, arrange for someone to drive you to and from your procedure and stay with you for the first 24 hours post-op. This ensures that you can focus your attention on resting and recovering.

What to Expect During the Recovery Process

Everyone’s body heals differently. However, in general, your entire recovery process will take between two and four weeks. The two most significant factors that determine how quickly you recover are the extent of the procedure and how closely you follow your recovery plan. Here is what you can expect during your recovery process:

No Cigarettes

Cigarettes contain over a hundred chemical compounds, including nicotine. Unfortunately, nicotine constricts your blood vessels, which means that essential nutrients may not be able to make it to your neck where they can speed your healing process.

Moreover, because your blood vessels are constricted, your blood pressure is elevated. To ensure a smooth recovery, you need to take steps to keep your blood pressure within a normal range. We strongly encourage our clients to stop smoking until they are done recovering from their procedure. If you are in fairly good health, this shouldn’t be much longer than two weeks.

No Alcohol

There are several reasons why alcohol consumption should be avoided during your recovery process. First and foremost, it elevates your blood pressure. Depending on how much you drink, it may elevate your blood pressure to the point that it is no longer within a healthy range. Drinking is just not worth the risk of elevating your blood pressure to an unhealthy level.

Second, alcohol acts as a diuretic. In other words, it flushes out an excessive amount of water from your body. There are a couple of problems with this. First, you must remain hydrated during your recovery process. Second, your neck skin needs all the nutrients it can get to recover quickly. Alcohol flushes essential nutrients out.

Lots of Fruits and Veggies

To speed up your recovery process, make sure you are eating fruits or vegetables with every meal. For instance, eat an omelet with mushrooms, tomatoes, and spinach for breakfast or whip up a refreshing smoothie with full-fat yogurt, spinach, kale, and local, seasonal fruit. Lunch and dinner can center around legumes, poultry, and seafood.

Loads of Protein

Protein is crucial for a speedy recovery. Most sources of protein include high levels of collagen: an essential nutrient that keeps your skin tight, smooth, young, and attractive.

If you’re not sure how many grams of protein you need per day, ask your primary care physician for a referral to a licensed nutritionist. Most women need at least 46 grams of protein per day. Most men need at least 56 grams of protein daily. Excellent sources of bioavailable protein include eggs, yogurt, milk, cheese, nuts, game meat, and poultry.

Benefits of a Necklifss Skin Reduction

Most people consider a neck lift to reverse the signs of aging. However, that is not all this procedure can do. For instance, if you have recently lost a significant amount of weight, you may have excess neck skin.

Some people think excess neck skin makes them look older than they actually are. Other people feel that excess neck skin is a constant reminder of the years of poor nutritional decisions they made over the past several years. Regardless, they are dissatisfied with their appearance. Even if you think you’re too young, you may be a good candidate for neck rejuvenation.

Platysmal Band Reduction

Whether you are overweight or not, you may have the appearance of platysmal bands. Platysmal bands are the bands of fat around your neck that make you look older and heavier than you actually are. This can easily be addressed during your neck rejuvenation procedure by removing the excess fat and restructuring the underlying muscle and lifting the skin.

Jawline and Chin Contouring

If you have loose neck skin, there is a good chance that your jawline and chin are not very well defined. Even if a poorly defined jawline and chin region doesn’t make you look older than your chronological age, it can make you look heavier and less feminine or masculine. We can address this during your neck rejuvenation procedure.

Underlying Muscle Tightening

Sometimes, it’s not just your neck skin that is loose. If you don’t exercise your neck regularly, you may have weak, loose neck muscles. Neck muscles may also weaken and loosen in the event of a traumatic injury, such as whiplash after a motor vehicle accident. Regardless of why your neck muscles are slacking, we can tighten and restructure them with ease.

Skin Smoothing

Even if you don’t have excess skin that needs to be removed, you will notice your skin is significantly smoother after this procedure. This is primarily due to the neck skin being lifted and tightened. However, sagging skin isn’t the only cause of fine lines, wrinkles, and deep folds.

Your underlying muscle tissue and excess fat can also be to blame for poor skin texture. If you let us know about your concerns during your initial consultation, we can safely and easily remove excess muscle tissue and remove excess fat from your neck.

Lasting Results

Another incredible benefit of this procedure is the results are long-lasting. The longevity of your results will depend on several factors, including your skin health, overall health, age, and lifestyle. However, on average, the results of this procedure will last between 10 and 15 years.

To extend the results of your procedure drastically, do not smoke, eat your fruits and veggies, and minimize your consumption of alcohol. Chemical compounds found in cigarettes destroy existing collagen and elastin and slow the growth of new collagen and elastin. Remember, these proteins and fibers are what keeps your skin looking young and healthy.

You Are Probably a Good Candidate

Neck lifts aren’t just for people in their 50s or 60s. Even healthy individuals experience a significant reduction in how quickly their skin develops collagen by the age of 30. This reduction in production capacity continues to slow every year thereafter.

For this reason, people in their 30s or 40s can significantly benefit from this procedure. It may even be better to undergo this procedure when you are younger because you will recover faster and the results will last longer. Furthermore, the best defense is an aggressive offense. Keep your skin looking young, beautiful, and healthy before it gets too bad.

Non-Invasive Neck Rejuvenation Treatments

Not everyone is the ideal candidate for platysmaplasty (loose and excess skin correction) or cervicoplasty (skin, fat, and muscle correction). Even if you are a good candidate for one of these procedures, you may benefit just as much from a non-invasive treatment.

Kybella

Kybella is a non-invasive neck rejuvenation treatment designed to treat platysmal bands. Kybella features the active ingredient deoxycholic acid. This chemical compound is found naturally in your gut and usually processes and eliminates dietary fat. However, when injected into your bands of neck fat, those white fat cells will be destroyed and flushed out.

It can take up to six weeks to see the results of Kybella. However, the results are well worth the wait. Some of our clients prefer this method of fat removal and neck rejuvenation because the results improve over time. You won’t look like you’ve had “work done.” You’ll just look like you’re losing excess fat in your neck due to hard work and determination.

ThermiRF

ThermiRF is another non-invasive neck rejuvenation treatment. This revolutionary radiofrequency treatment is ideal for people who are concerned about loose skin but do not have excess muscle tissue or poorly shaped muscles. After a brief injection of a local anesthetic to numb the neck, a tiny cannula is inserted into the neck.

This cannula emits radiofrequency energy that warms the deepest foundational layers of your skin. This warmth stimulates your skin to produce strong, healthy collagen proteins, and elastin fibers. With time, your loose skin will become tighter and tighter until you look as young as you did five or more years ago. These results last two to three years.
